Preparing Your Home for Storm Season

11/6/2023 (Permalink)

Roof damage. Stay safe, stay prepared, and be ready to weather any storm that comes your way.

As a storm approaches, taking proactive steps to safeguard your home is crucial for your family's safety and the protection of your property. At SERVPRO®, we understand the devastating impact storms can have on homes, and we're here to help you prepare. In this blog, we'll share essential tips to ensure your home is ready to weather the storm season. By implementing these recommendations, you can reduce the risk of damage and minimize potential headaches in the aftermath.

1. Create an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit is your first line of defense during a storm. Here's what you should include:

  • Non-perishable Food and Water: Store at least a three-day supply for your family, including pets.

  • Flashlights and Batteries: Ensure you have working flashlights and spare batteries.

  • First Aid Supplies: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, medications, and any specific medical supplies your family needs.

  • Important Documents: Safeguard your insurance policies, identification, and other critical documents in waterproof containers.

2. Secure Outdoor Items

High winds during storms can turn outdoor items into projectiles. Secure or store them to prevent damage:

  • Outdoor Furniture: Bring it inside or secure it to prevent it from blowing away.

  • Lawn Equipment: Store lawnmowers, trimmers, and other equipment in a safe place.

  • Trim Trees and Branches: Prune trees near your home to reduce the risk of falling limbs.

3. Reinforce Windows and Doors

Strong winds can damage or break windows and doors, leading to water intrusion. Here's how to reinforce them:

  • Install Storm Shutters: Invest in storm shutters to protect windows during severe weather.

  • Seal Gaps: Use weatherstripping to seal gaps around doors and windows to prevent drafts and leaks.

4. Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Blocked gutters can lead to water damage. Ensure they're clear of debris to channel rainwater away from your home. Clean gutters and downspouts at least twice a year, and more often if you're in an area prone to heavy rainfall.

5. Check Sump Pumps and Drains:

In areas prone to flooding, a functioning sump pump is essential. Inspect and maintain your pump regularly:

  • Test the Sump Pump: Pour water into the sump pit to ensure the pump activates.

  • Battery Backup: Consider installing a battery backup for your sump pump in case of power outages.

6. Know Your Insurance Coverage:

Review your homeowner's insurance policy to understand what is covered and what is not. If you're in a flood-prone area, consider purchasing flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

7. Develop a Family Emergency Plan

Ensure your family knows what to do during a storm:

  • Designate Safe Areas: Identify safe areas in your home and make sure everyone knows where to go.

  • Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan to stay in touch if family members are separated.

8. Stay Informed

Monitor weather alerts and news updates regularly. Consider weather apps and NOAA weather radios to stay informed about changing conditions and evacuation notices.

By following these essential storm preparation tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage to your home and protect your family during a storm. In case of storm-related damage, remember that SERVPRO® of Tarzana/Reseda is here to assist with storm damage restoration and cleanup. Stay safe, stay prepared, and be ready to weather any storm that comes your way.

  1. Stay away from floodwaters. If flowing stream water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  2. If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  3. During a flood keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

What Not to Do After a Flood In Your Tarzana and Reseda Home

10/14/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Home If you have experienced a flood or any type of water damage in Tarzana/Reseda, SERVPRO can help get your home back to its pre-flood condition. Give

During a storm, flood water can invade your home and cause water damage to your property. Once the storm has passed, you can return to assess the damage and begin the cleanup process. Here are three things you should NOT do when returning to the site of a flood.

  1. Make Contact With the Water
Flood water can contain many different types of contaminants including bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and debris. Help protect your skin by wearing rubber boots and gloves and keeping your hands and face from making contact with the water. If contact occurs, wash immediately with soap and clean water.
  2. Enter Standing Water
After a flood, homes, yards, streets, and other areas can be covered in standing water. Powerful winds often accompany heavy storms, so it is not uncommon to find downed power lines after a storm. Since water from a flood is usually murky, you cannot always tell what lies beneath the surface. If the water has been electrically charged, you could experience an electric shock if you enter a flooded home.
  3. Let the Water Sit
The longer water stays sitting the longer it has to grow bacteria. When items are left to sit in water for long periods of time, the structural integrity of those items can begin to break down. The water should be safely extracted as soon as possible. Cleaning the water faster, you can help to prevent further water damage to your home. Since mold can begin forming in as little as 24 hours, it is important to begin the drying process as soon as the water has been extracted.

By following a few precautions, you can help keep yourself safe from the dangers of floodwater.

It is so important to remember as Southern California comes out of wildfire season and the dry hot summer months just how nature and water react to the charred debris, lack of foliage, and loose soil. A combination of Fire, Strong Winds, and Rain Storms, are the perfect recipe for disaster in our Tarzana and Reseda communities.

In Los Angeles County, California, we don't see rain very often.  So it is when we least expect it that emergency situations occur due to flooding, flash floods, & rainstorms.

In order to prepare, inspect your home and property and look for excess debris, hazards, and loose branches. If your home is in the Hills, does your home have trenches that re-direct the rainwater? Do you have retention walls? Be aware of the warning signs. Always have an emergency flood plan ready.

Check out Ready.gov for more information on how to protect your homes against Flash Floods and Mudslides or any natural disaster.

How to Protect Your Home or Business In a Flood Zone

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

Preparing for a flood. If your home or business has recently suffered from flood damage, then contact SERVPRO of Tarzana/Reseda 818-881-3636.

Each year property owners face the possibility of flooding, whether it’s from a heavy rain storm or burst piping. It’s important to stay prepared & to protect your property if it's near a flood zone. Although you can’t completely stop a flood, you can minimize the impact that water has. Below are a few steps you can do to help keep water from invading & destroying your property.

 Have a Plan of Action

The best thing you can do if you think you live in a flood zone is to have a plan of action in advance. Here is a list of things to consider:

  • Store all important documents in a watertight secure container.
  • Have a separate lockbox for jewelry & any other valuables.
  • Contact your marketing representative at SERVPRO of Tarzana/Reseda in advance and set up an Emergency Ready Plan for protecting your home & getting a quick service response after a flood.

Invest in Flood Barriers & Sand Bags

Let’s face it, some homes are more susceptible to water damage. Lower flood water, however, can be contained by simply laying out sandbags & setting up flood barriers around your doors. Even if some water manages to get, sandbags & flood barriers can reduce the water damage & can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.

 Rethink Your Home’s Construction

If you are building a new home or renovating your current one, then invest in components that are waterproof or create a tighter seal around the structure. Some of these include:

  • Concrete flooring instead of wooden floorboards
  • One-way valves in your plumbing to prevent water backup in the plumbing system
  • Waterproof all of your electrical outlets
  • Cement render & lime plaster
  • Water resistant window & door frames
  • Flood skirts around brick homes

FLOODING - Who is responsible if you are renting?

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

Flood Insurance -

Flood insurance is not commonly included in a standard property policy.  You have to add it. Neither is it standard in a renters policy. The insurance can be purchased as a separate policy that requires a waiting period of 30 days before coverage begins.

 Landlord's Responsibility -

Landlords are usually responsible for insurance for the property itself. Property protection commonly includes:

  • Structural damage
  • Appliance replacement
  • Fixed Fixtures
  • Pipes and things inside the wall
  • Restoration to the structure by qualified specialists

Responsibility of Tenants -

The tenants are commonly responsible for an insurance policy that covers personal possessions. If a flood is covered, the renter’s coverage can also include:

  • Paid temporary relocation in a comparable home
  • General living expenses like food and clothing
  • Replacement of personal items affected by the loss

Unusual Circumstances -

Often times landlords are not responsible for the tenant’s property.  However, If the property owner is responsible through neglect or irresponsibility, the tenant may have a legal case against the landlord for damages incurred and pursue restitution.

  • Be prepared flash floods and head for higher ground. Even a low level of fast-moving flood water produces a lot of force, and the most dangerous thing you can do is to try walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters. As little as two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.

Now that you know the difference, be prepared and stay safe.

Preventing flood damage

- Clean your roof’s gutters and downspouts and divert water 6 feet away from the building

- Get an automatic emergency generator to provide you with electricity during blackouts

- Purchase a sump pump that can drain water from your property and prevents water from rising during a storm

- Seal openings or cracks in the walls, floors, foundations and windows of your house

- Install porous pavement around your home to help absorb rainwater

- Ensure that your drainage systems and plumbing are functioning properly

- Check all of your appliance hoses to make sure they are in good repair

2 Ways Water Can Get in During a Storm.

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Well equipped to handle any size disaster

SERVPRO of Woodland Hills Tips for Storm Damage -

Yes, there are 2 ways water can get into your home, office, or warehouse. From the top and from the bottom. If it comes in the property from the roof it is usually because of faulty shingles or gutters that were not cleaned.  Please clean your gutters!  The damage is definitely an inconvenience but, fortunately, it is usually covered under your insurance policy.

If it enters from the base of the property, it is called groundwater infiltration and this type of water damage is most likely not going to be covered by your insurance policy. You will need to make sure the drainage works all around when preparing for winter storms.  But make no mistake about it, the damage needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

What to do:

Start by turning off the power in that area. (remember electricity and water are a bad combination) Be sure you know what you are doing.  Remove the standing water by using a wet/dry vacuum, mopping it up, or using a sump pump. If you have fans, bring those in to circulate the air and dry out the space. Hint: If there is any evidence of mold, do not use the fans since this will spread the spores. If the water level can be measured in inches, you need to call in a professional.  The water remediation professionals at SERVPRO of Woodland Hills have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Prepare for your pets too!

Pet Storm Preparedness tips from SERVPRO of Tarzana and Reseda -

Most dog and cat owners don't have disaster preparedness plans for their pets. SERVPRO of Tarzana and Reseda urges you to make sure this isn’t you.

You would make a disaster kit for yourself and family, so make one for your pet. This includes medical records and medication, food and water with can openers, leashes, and carriers.

Tips:

  • Bring pets indoors at the first sign of a storm. Animals can become confused and inadvertently run away from home during a disaster.
  • Arrange a safe haven for you and your pets during evacuation. Do not leave pets behind.
  • Store an emergency kit—with items such as pet food, bottled water, medical records, a blanket, a flashlight and leashes—as close to an exit as possible.
  • Make sure all pets wear collars and tags. Also have your pet microchipped in case of a lost collar.
  • Place a rescue alert sticker to your front home to let rescuers know that there are pets inside.
  • Choose a caregiver to take care of your pet in the event you are unable to.

SERVPRO is available 24/7/365 for your Emergency Restoration needs!  818-881-3636
