Why Does My Heater Smell?

As we are approaching the cooler seasons you may be running your heater more. If you haven't run your heater in a while, once you turn it on you may think “what is that funny smell?”

If you have ever thought this, don't worry you're not the only one. Don't ignore what you're smelling, depending on the smell there may be an easy solution or possibly a problem. 

Does it smell Musty? 

When your heater is releasing a musty smell it may signify mold. Make sure you inspect your unit, get it cleaned and replace as needed to protect your home. 

Does it smell Dusty or Damp? 

Don't worry. This is normal. Overtime dirt and dust will build up. This smell will go away with more use to the heater. 

Does it smell like smoke or oil? 

If you have an oil furnace it is possible it could be leaking oil. A leak like this could put you at risk for fire damage.
